Paul Tinkerhess and his wife Claire Tinkerhess own Fourth Avenue Birkenstock, a shoe store in downtown Ann Arbor. They organized the annual Water Hill Music Festival in that neighborhood from 2011 to 2018.
His family's 1969 Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines secured First Amendment protection for students.

Any Michiganian with a democratic bone in their body wants to see the people of Michigan represented at this summer's Democratic convention in Denver. But I have been deeply disturbed to hear leaders of my Michigan Democratic Party, folks whose entire skeletons should be democratic, calling for delegates to be apportioned based on the results of our Jan. 15 primary. You don't have to be Jimmy Carter to see this was not a legitimate election. There was only one viable candidate on the ballot and the primary had been declared invalid ahead of time by its sanctioning body.
