Petitions for Ann Arbor City Elected Office: Overview

Under Ann Arbor's city charter, candidates for city council and mayor are required to collect signatures from registered voters in order to appear on the ballot. Candidates for mayor are required to obtain 50 signatures from registered voters of each of the city's five wards, for a total of 250 signatures. City council candidates are required to obtain signatures from 100 people registered to vote in the ward they seek to represent.

Since the adoption of the 1956 city charter, each ward has been represented by two councilmembers, who serve two-year terms. In any given year, one of the two seats in each ward is up for election. The mayor serves a two-year term and is also a member of the city council. The position of mayor is elected in every even year.

Since Jan. 1, 2014, the deadline for submitting petition signatures for August partisan primaries has fallen in late April – on the 15th Tuesday before the primary election. The deadline for candidates unaffiliated with a party (independents) has fallen in early July. Precise deadline dates for filing paperwork for the current election cycle are available from the city clerk's office.

Updating this Page

In any election cycle, as additional candidates take out petitions, or submit them or get them verified, that information can be added to cells in the current table. New table rows can be added by right-clicking (Windows) or CTL-clicking (Mac) on the table. City clerk staff will provide the most recent data to anyone to calls or asks in person. If no new information is available, this page can be updated above to record the last date when information was checked – as a courtesy to other contributors and to city clerk staff, who probably don't need to be asked several times a day by several different people if new information is available. Update strategy: Inquire periodically with city clerk's office if new information is available. For a new election cycle, add a new section to this page with a blank table.
