A Missouri farmer who moved to Berkeley in 1858 with his family. His two African-American companions are believed to be the first black residents of Berkeley.

The site of his house is a city landmark. The Byrne house plaque is located on 1301 Oxford Street.

He later became popular as the town's postmaster. 1
