According to an October 6, 1899 article in the Idaho Daily Statesman the Idaho Independent Telephone Company was given the rights to construct and operate a telephone service in Boise. Carol Lynn MacGregor states in Boise, Idaho 1882-1910: Prosperity in Isolation that “the system’s regional structure [was] named Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Company.” It was this system that would provide Boise with telephone service.

In 1911 Rocky Mountain Bell was in financial trouble and a new company, Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph, was formed. This operated officially under the same name until 1991 when it was merged with U.S. West Communication. Eventually operations switched to the name Qwest that served the area until 2011 when CenturyLink acquired it and all operations assumed that name.
