Ronald McDonald House of Charities

The very first Ronald McDonald House of Charities was established in Philadelphia in 1974 with the mission of providing temporary housing for families of sick and injured children receiving medical treatment. The vision of this organization is to provide a home away from home, offering hope and comfort during difficult times. In a fashion that is always friendly, supportive, respectful, and responsive to individual needs.

Since 1974 over 300 Ronald McDonald houses have been built throughout the world. The first house built within the Treasure Valley opened its doors February 1, 1988. It was the smallest Ronald McDonald House in the world and was constructed in Boise across the street from St. Luke's Children's Hospital. When the house was first built it only had 4 bedrooms. 23 years later the facility has gone through two expansions, is now 17,000 square feet and has the capability of housing up to 19 families.

I recently called and spoke with the weekend manager at the Boise Ronald McDonald house whom chose not to disclose his name but stated that “families are welcome to stay within the house as long as their children are receiving treatment and do not live within Ada County.” He also informed me that “On average they accommodate up to 600 families a year and although it is not required it is suggested that families staying donate $10 for each night they reside within the house.” Common areas within the home include two kitchens, dining areas, a large living room, playroom, three laundry rooms, a media room and a large backyard with a playground area.

All Ronald McDonald houses are non-profit organizations that raise money through donations and signature fund raising events. People of the community are encouraged to get involved either by donating money, food or a number of other ways.
