This is a student article for professor Maria Pabico's Web Publishing and Social Media class project at SUNY Buffalo State.

The Record is SUNY Buffalo State's weekly student-run newspaper. With a diversity of stories and events being covered, The Record serves as the voice of the school, publishing original information about the happenings on the Elmwood campus that cannot be found through other media outlets. It caters the latest newsworthy information to students, professors, administrators and area residents, as the coverage is hyper-local. The paper is sponsored by Buffalo State’s United Students Government.

Production night of The Record is every Tuesday, with a student editorial staff designing the layout of the paper. The Record, which usually consists of eight-, 10- or 12-pages issues, hits campus newsstands almost every Wednesday morning during the fall and spring semesters. On top of the print editions, The Record has recently gone digital with a website, where every print-published story can be found. There is also a phone application for the publication, as well as a twitter account.

Mission The Record is a student organization that allows journalism and other communication students a forum to practice their area of study. It is also for them to represent the identity of the college's community with integrity, honesty and objectivity.

Sections

The Record consists of four sections — news, culture, sports and opinion.

News: The news section features both planned and unplanned events or happenings that occur around campus. This section usually contains the most vital information to students. Any timely information associated with the needs and functions of the campus and people that work or attend there can be found in news.

The variance of stories is typically determined by occurrence. With safety and parking being an issue on the campus, stories involving those tend to receive extended coverage. The Record has covered national stories, as well, including the 2012 presidential election.

Culture: Coverage and announcements of any events entertainment- or socially- oriented can be found in the culture section. The coverage includes theatre, concerts, fashion shows and any other event that is sponsored or in association with a campus organization. The section tends to include a plethora photos to go along with print content.

Sports: All Buffalo State varsity sports teams are covered in the sports section of the paper. The staff members are given beats they are to report on once a week to keep readers updated with how the school’s athletic teams are faring.

Stories are not limited to the playing surface, as anything directly affecting sports at Buffalo State can be found here, with a variety of feature pieces published throughout each semester. With much recent construction on the campus, the sports section provides updates of the effect it will have on the sports department and current and future students.

Feature stories are a decent portion of the section, as they provide human interest stories about athletes at Buffalo State or coverage of other unique events. Column writing is present in sports, too. These are typically the only pieces that go beyond the walls of Buffalo State. They are published once a week and can be about anything in the sporting world.

Opinion: The opinion section is open to any writer on The Record staff and student on campus. The main goal of the section is to let the writers’ voice be heard. If they have an opinion they’d like expressed, this is the place to do it. Examples of things writers have sounded off about include parking, eating healthy as a college student, politics and music.

History: The Record is the second-oldest campus newspaper in western New York. It started publication in 1913, marking 2013 as its 100th anniversary. Prominent professional journalists have done work with The Record within that time, including Buffalo News’ sports writers, Bob DiCesare and Mark Gaughan.

100th Anniversary: The paper will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary throughout the 2013 spring semester, as well as the 2013 fall semester to commemorate the century of dedication and service The Record has given to the Buffalo State campus.

Events to celebrate the momentous occasion are still in the preliminary stage, but a panel discussion of some sort, featuring multiple professionals in the communication field, will likely commence late in the spring semester. A public dinner is also being planned to expose not only the recent work of The Record, but the full 100 years of its existence.

Every issue printed during the 2013 spring and fall semesters, will include a “This week in The Record history” section. This will give readers a look back in time to see what was happening on campus on that week a certain amount of years ago. This honors the past by allowing readers to appreciate past work done.

Recent prominent stories: 2012 fall semester starts with a bang: A freshman student was shot nearby the Buffalo State campus during his first week of college in late August, 2012. The student survived, but received a cast on his arm due to the damage done by the gunman. Four hours after that incident, two female students were robbed of their purses near the campus. These were the start of a series of events that brought the safety of the campus into even bigger question.

Football team defeats No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater: The Buffalo State football team traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Sept. 15, 2012, and upset the No. 1 team in the nation. At the time, UW-W was the three-time defending national champions and owners of a 46-game winning streak. Buffalo State Athletics Director and head football coach Jerry Boyes called it the biggest win in program history.

Jake Simmons breaks all-time scoring record: Men’s basketball player Jake Simmons broke the school's all-time scoring record previously owned by former NBA All-Star Randy Smith during his senior season. Smith held the record of 1,712 points since 1971, until Simmons eclipsed his mark on Dec. 14, 2012. Smith spent 1971-1983 in the NBA after his days at Buffalo State, where he was a three-sport All-American, also excelling in soccer and track and field. With a such a significant record standing for so long, this story was one of the biggest ever covered by The Record’s sports department.
