Google Map Screenshot The U.S. - Canada Border is an important feature of the Buffalo Region which acts as a "buffer" between Ontario, Canada and the rest of New York.

The border runs in a south to north direction along the Niagara River from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario passing through the Niagara Falls. The border also runs more east-west through both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, providing additional square mileage to various towns and counties in New York without increasing their land area.

Border Matters

Being so close to Canada has it's advantages. Until recently, one of them was being able to visit our neighbors to the North with ID cards one already possessed. Not anymore! Before June 1, 2009, you must have one of four forms of ID 1:

  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Passport Card
  • Enhanced Driver's License
  • Trusted Traveler Program Card (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST).
