About Us

The Canton Community Foundation was established in 1989 as a way to engage the community in local philanthropy. It was the brainchild of a group of men and women who knew that by pooling their resources – both intellectual and financial – that they could make a lasting and impactful difference in our community. This was at a time when Canton was just beginning to see the housing market grow at an incredible rate. Many of the developers invested in the Foundation in order to show their commitment to the community.

Well-regarded local business people like Jack Demmer, Tom Yack, and Paul Denski, Jr. were instrumental in helping the Foundation cement itself as a respected institution for long-term philanthropy.

The financial crisis of 2007 saw the developers leaving Canton and the residents struggling. While things slowed at the Foundation as far as opening new funds, the need grew with regard to helping local residents.

Now, 10 years after the financial downturn, the Canton Community Foundation is going strong and continues to see new growth. Our outreach has changed over the past 28 years – because the word “community” has changed.

With the transient lifestyle that so many of us lead, the majority of people who were raised in a particular area don’t necessarily remain in that area. Young people go where the jobs are. But, now more than ever before in history, young and older alike want to be a part of the change. The Canton Community Foundation is opening funds for people not only around the state but across the country. Our ability to help our donors achieve the philanthropic goals is not limited to our township or our state. We are here to help our donors serve the “community” they are passionate about.

The words may have changed over the past 28 years … but the intent and vision of our founders has never strayed.

“If the gifts of one person can be so influential, imagine how a group of donors with the same vision for their gifts could significantly impact a community."
