The Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago was created in 1866 by Leonard W. Volk and other artists who helped him and is also located in Grant Park Chicago Illinois. It is well known by tourists and locals as one of the largest and oldest museums of art in the country. The museum has 300,000 works of art permanently placed inside. Since the opening, there has been over 1.5 million visitors each year. The Art Institute of Chicago is well known for the two big, green statues of lions placed at the main entrance of the building. It started out as the Chicago Academy of Design in 1866 then had it's name changed in 1879 to Chicago Academy of Fine Art. SAIC is also what the art institute is called and it is known for it's strenuous and most successful schools for exhibition and studio arts education. In 1882 the name changed again to what it is known as today, The Art Institute of Chicago and moved into the building it is in now and famous for which was originally built for the World's Columbian Exposition in the year 1893.
The Art Institute of Chicago is known as one of the earliest formed art and design school in the United States. It is not only a museum for the public eye, but it is also a very well known school with a challenging but worth it education. The school has been ranked for the 220 best fine arts graduate programs. Historical and famous artists such as Sarah Vowel, LeRoy Nieman, David Sedaris, Halston, Elizabeth Murray, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Ivan Albright, Georgia O'Keefe, Roger Brown, Claes Oldenburg, H.C. Westermann, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Ed Paschke, Cynthia Rowley, Grant Wood, Halston, and David Sedaris. The Art Institue of Chicago is where they revived their early training before moving on with their art work. This art institute created the Regionalist and Imagists, which are two important schools for American painting. There are other buildings for this school located in the center of the Loop, but the most popular and most visited site on their campus is The Art Institute of Chicago. The school offers several majors for their students. These majors are Art and Technology Studies, Arts Administration and Policy, Visual and Critical Studies, Writing, Visual Communication, Printmaking, Sculpture, Sound, Performance, Photography, New Media, Fashion Design, Filmmaking, Painting and Drawing, Art Education and Art Therapy, Interior Architecture, Ceramics, Fiber and Material Studies, Art History Theory and Criticism, and Historic Preservation. The school uses Science, Mathematics, and Humanities courses as a big role in advancement of their student artists. The Art Institute of Chicago has one of the largest museums from a school in the country. In 2001, Photography in this museum was known as what "broadened definition of Museum worthy art". It never was seen as big of an art in museums up until this time and the photography art work in The Art Institute of Chicago changed how the art of photographs were seen by society.
This institution changed the way art was seen and what type of art was seen as powerful and symbolic pieces. At one point this art institute was only hanging up art by one donor and they ended up changing the order and hanging art pieces from several donors and artists that created masterpieces. Famous pieces in this museum include: The Bedroom by Vincent Van Gogh which is his bedroom in his house in South of France, A Sunday After noon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat and fills a huge wall in the Art Institute of Chicago which has people enjoying a day by the banks in France, Nighthawks by Edward Hopper which is a picture of an all night diner with three customers and a worker of the restaurant in the city, American Gothic by Grant Wood where he paints a man and woman in the country showing the non complex farm life that people were forgetting about around that time, and The Child's Bath by Mary Cassatt and this painting shows a sweet and soft view of an adult helping a child bathe.
The Art Institute of Chicago was recognized several times by different sources for the a lot of the programs they offer at their school.
