César Chávez Day is an observed holiday by Chico State and other California Universities, as it is an official holiday in the state of California (as well as seven other states). Butte College students, however, still have to attend class. The weekend commences with a relatively large gathering of revelers on bikes , traveling throughout neighborhood just south of Chico State and downtown (or was that an unrelated Critical Mass event?). Then, the house parties begin and reaches a climax on César Chávez Day.

César Chávez is one of the most well-known civil rights activist in the United States. Chavez also focused on farm laborer rights. He was born March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona, and died April 23, 19931.
