Joe Valente, 26, has spent a significant amount of his life confronting and surmounting challenges. When Joe was born he had a major heart defect known as a Tetrology of Fallot. The condition led to three open heart surgeries, the first at only two days old. While waiting for this surgery Joe suffered a stroke which caused bilateral brain injury. With the long process of recovery ahead Joe began early childhood education to begin re-teaching his brain. Through the hard work of many individuals Joe was able to regain normal functionality of his brain with no lasting effects of the stroke. His second surgery was an emergency at nine months old and at age six he underwent his last heart surgery completing the needed repairs. Joe had a passion to play sports and after many pleadings and negotiations his doctor cleared him to play some sports including soccer and baseball. He went on to play three years of soccer and was a skilled and dedicated goalie. He played four years of baseball in high school.

Joe grew up in Ukiah, Ca where his father was a physician and his mother a manager and full time foster parent beginning in 1988. Joe’s parents have had over 125 foster children in the past 20 years, most of whom were raised along with Joe. Through his experiences he learned to deal with a diverse group of people from all walks of life. Joe has taken this ability to work and communicate with people to be one of his greatest strengths.

After graduating from high school, Joe moved to San Luis Obispo to attended Cuesta College. During his time in San Luis Obispo he worked on a L.E.E.D certified Gold building for the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden Center. The project sparked his interest and gave him invaluable training in Sustainable Design and Construction. Joe served on the Construction Technology Advisory Board at Cuesta College and was the leader of their Skills USA team. The team took 3rd place in the nation in a competition which requires a team of four to complete a joint construction project in two days to test their skills in residential construction. Joe graduated from Cuesta College with a degree in construction technology and transfer studies he is now attending CSU Chico.

At the age of 16, Joe opened his first business in Ukiah and has not lost the entrepreneurial spirit. When he moved to Chico in 2006 he opened Wedding Crashers professional party rentals and services and in 2007 after obtaining his general contractor license he opened up Valentium Construction. In 2007 Joe applied for the General Plan Advisory Committee in hopes of beginning to serve the City of Chico. He did not make the position but the experience further ignited his interest in becoming a council member.

In 2006, Joe began donating to Sunshine Kids Club of Chico to support them in providing their very important services to the area. The relationship has grown and he hopes to continue to help the Sunshine Kids as he believes that they are a very necessary function for the youth with and without special needs in the community.

The core of Joe’s life is his family and they have continued to grow with 12 brothers and sisters ranging from 9 to 45 and he is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 10th nephew/niece.
