La Mexicana Bakery is one of the hidden treasures in Chico. The way the shop works is very simple: You walk in, pick up a cafeteria-style tray and some metal tongs, load the tray up with as much baked goods as you'd like, then bring it to the counter to have it bagged up for you. With most all baked goodies costing you only 30 cents, this market is an amazing way to stretch your cash. They bake cookies, breads, cakes, and other types of traditional Mexican baked goods. Also, in the summer, its great to ride your bike over there and dig into their freezer which is always stocked full of fruit-based frozen pops. No syrup-based crapsicles to be found, these popsicles contain real fruit and come in flavors such as strawberry, coconut, and coffee! I would highly recommend this bakery for all of you looking to experience a different kind of bakery. Other groceries available include many varieties of powdered chilies, tortillas, corn husks, and more!

My favorite: They make a light, molasses-based bread in the form of pigs. Get one. You will love it.

Be Warned: As long as I have been going there, they have never had air conditioning. As hot as you think it is outside, it is ten degrees hotter inside. Make a plan while looking through their large glass windows, then run in, get your treats, and get out!
