Mount Shasta is a glacier capped stratovolcano or composite cone within the Cascade Range. It also has a parasitic cone on its western flank known as Shastina and further to the west, right off Interstate 5, a cinder cone known as Black Butte. But more than that, Mount Shasta is known as a sacred site to some Native American groups in California. For example, legend has it that the spirit of Chief Skell inhabits the mountain.

It is near the cities of Mount Shasta and Weed, about 63 miles north of Redding. Parts of the mountain is managed by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest (Shasta-T) while others are privately owned and often times are locations of resorts. There are many opportunities for hiking, skiing, snow-shoeing, swimming, or making your favorite geologist one very happy creature!
