Sophia's Thai Cuisine has a crumb trail that stretches from Davis, CA to Paradise (7641 Skyway) and then to Chico. Owners Sophia Patterson and James Sirivongsa owned the Sophia's Thai Kitchen in Davis until 1999. They moved north and put their culinary skills to use at a restaurant in Paradise and later opened this Chico location.

The Chico restaurant, relative to other local Thai restaurants, is minimally decorated. They offer many of the standards though they are one of the few that have Som Tum, a spicy shredded papaya salad. Nearly all dishes can be made with chicken, beef, vegetables or tofu. They have a wealth of curry, soup, barbecue, and seafood dishes — of which may not be found elsewhere. Sophia's doesn't use a numbered rating for spiciness — instead it seems to go from mild, mild-spicy, medium, medium-spicy, and spicy (essentially 1-5). According to a Paradise Post article posted on Sophia's Thai Cuisine website, the owners had to tone down the spiciness for this area's residents. Davisites apparently like it really hot. Sodas are not fountain drinks but come in 20 oz bottles. Both Pepsi and Coke are available.

If you are vegetarian or vegan, remember to ask if a dish has fish or oyster sauce in it.

In addition to dining in, food can be ordered to-go.

2011-01-02 15:21:42   This is the best place to get Thai food in Chico. I love the atmosphere inside the restaurant, even though the eating area is a little small. Prices are pretty reasonable and the portions are larger than other Thai places in Chico. If you are not a fan of spicy food, beware that even "mild' can be a little too spicy for some. —endlessroad
