Perhaps what sticks out to most people about these orchards are how the bottom part of walnut trunks are miscolored and are often bulging out. Well, you're right, something is amiss. The lower part of the trunk IS from a different tree.

The White English Walnut grown around here is very susceptible to a root fungus. However, the native California Black Walnut is resistant. Fortunately for farmers, the root stock of the Black Walnut can be grafted to the English Walnut, solving this vexing problem.
