I agree 100% with you Emily, unfortunately its not just ASUCD. I've met many other student government folks in my time and it seems involvement in AS' is low everywhere. There are exceptions, like Santa Barbara which spends tens of thousands on advertising their student elections, but even then voter turnout is only has high as 30%. Even in state and national elections where the stakes are obviously much higher young people don't vote in large numbers much less participate in the system. How do we work to fix a national phenomenon, locally?
ASUCD is a part-time government at best. It is difficult for students to fully dedicate themselves to the promotion of ASUCD without neglecting their studies, sports, jobs, other clubs and internal ASUCD work. Some roadblocks that come up in outreach are: outreach is not an attractive issue that students want to dedicate time to. Most student want to get involved with environmental, cultural, entertainment, social justice issues as a primary passion and maybe outreach as a secondary. And usually if they do want to do outreach it is for their primary passion and not just for ASUCD. Second would be advertising. The Aggie does not cover ASUCD and does not give it discounts to advertise. Also the ASUCD budget is declining and the scarce resources are being fought over existing programs, thus new money for new promotions is hard to come by. I am not saying outreach is impossible, I am just outlining some difficulties. I have worked hard at outreach and co-created my own plan which will be up and running this Fall. Will it work? I don't know. I can say that I learned a lot about outreach over the years, made mistakes-learned from them and put those learning experiences into the assembly idea.
I'm not sure what to tell you about the lack of Asian representation. I don't think its because they are not outreached too. Every election both student focus and lead have gone to Asian student groups and groups with a majority of Asian membership. Its definitely something to look into. -JamesSchwab

2007-12-21 11:48:48 Concerning my comment about Asian-Americans and television viewing habits, if I were to say "African-Americans watch more television than average, would I be a racist? Using your metric, I would. What if Neilson says they do? Surprise, Neilson says they do watch more television than the average and by quite a bit. Unfortunately, Neilson does not have any free information concerning Asian-American viewing habits. The report that probably has the information costs $125 and I'm not about to buy it just to win an argument. I could make the argument that since African-Americans watch more, some group must watch less, but I don't think that would be statistically defenseable.
To jump to the heart of the matter, you seem to feel that *any* opinion of the collective characteristics (or that collective characteristics even exist) of Asian-Americans is racist. Is this right? —GrumpyoldGeek

Secondly, I'm not sure you want to have a dialog about this. I read your post and I read between the lines. I'm not comfortable with your veiled "trivialized my cultural identity" accusation.
