Built in 1891 by architect Oliver G. Traphagen, the house is also referred to as "the Redstone", from the reddish hue of the sandstone used, sourced at the Iron River Quarry in Wisconsin. Traphagen built many notable buildings in Duluth and was one the local architects of the Central High School.

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For a bio of Traphagen and a list of notable buildings by him, see the Wikipedia article.
