Building to be demolished

By PETER CROWLEY Enterprise Staff Writer

SARANAC LAKE - The storefront/apartment building at 120 Broadway in Saranac Lake is scheduled for demolition, according to an interdepartmental memo from Saranac Lake Development Administrator and Code Enforcement Officer Ed Randig to Saranac Lake Village Board members.

The crumbling, abandoned structure still bears the name of its former business, the Standard Tire and Supply Company.

Peter Yaglou of Tupper Lake, the building's owner, signed an agreement on March 24 to remove the structure, fill in the cellar, grade the lot and remove all debris by June 15. He is responsible for any accidents causing damage or injury that may occur as a result of the demolition. If the job is not complete by the June 15 deadline, the demolition permit states that "the applicant shall be subject to any penalties or violations" specified in the Chapter 10, Section 12 of the Village Building; Code, which mirrors Part 444 of New York State Law.

Randig said that village Building Office officials approached; Yaglou first about razing the building.

"We had sent him what we normally call a violation letter Randig said. This letter is in keeping with condemnation proceeding, which is : noted in Chapter 11 of Village Law.

They sent me a nasty letter," Yaglou said; "I'm not too fond of the village right now, but I'm just going to tear it (the building) down and try to save as much lumber as I can.

Yaglou said that he bought the building from Greg Mace owner of Adirondack Tire Co., across the street — about-two years ago.

"I bought the place because, it was earmarked for an $82,000 HUD (federal Office of Housing and Urban Development) grant," he said, "but a couple of months after I bought it funds were diverted to something else," He said that when the; Water mains were repaired on Broadway this past summer, blasting damaged the building's foundations further. He does not have the money, he said, to repair the building on his own.

The demolition has already begun, and Yaglou said that while it will be a slow process, it will be done by the deadline. He. is working every day after work and every weekend, salvaging as; much material as he can.

"We have every hope that Mr. Yaglou will use everything in his disposal to remove the building himself, rather than require the village to go through the procedure, that we normally would," Randig said.

Randig said that the Building Office is also looking at three other Saranac Lake buildings to be demolished in the near future.

If you look at the village of Saranac Lake, we've had several people in the winter months who have to deal with them one at a time.
