A. C. Bartz

A. C. Bartz, 79, active in Saranac Lake civic affairs from 1917 to 1958, died suddenly Wednesday evening. He had been living in Webster since 1959.

Mr. Bartz was president of the Saranac Lake General Hospital board when an x-ray was installed there. He and the late Miss L. Celeste Thierot headed the drive for $40,000 to expand hospital facilities and house the x-ray equipment. In recognition of their efforts they were named man and woman of the year in Saranac Lake in 1949. After the addition to the hospital was built, Mr. Bartz then proceeded to fashion hand-made furniture for the reception room in the x-ray department.

Mr. Bartz first came here in 1909 as a patient at Ray Brook Hospital from Buffalo, where he was born on March 15, 1881 and decided in 1915 to settle here permanently. After his complete cure in 1917, he went into the dairy business although he had previously been a highly skilled machinist and metal worker. Over the years he found time for many civic activities.

He and Mrs. Bartz, the former Margaret Wiley, moved to Western New York for a time but returned to Saranac Lake in 1928 and bought the Durgan dairy farm. Mrs. Bartz died about 1950.

He retired from the dairy business in 1915, selling it to Dairy Dell Inc. and devoted almost all of his time to the hospital.

In 1951 he married Mrs. Edith Lusink of Rochester, widow of Roy Lusink, and in 1959 they moved to Webster.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Augusta Zoller, of Buffalo, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Schaumann Funeral Home in Rochester. Burial will be in the family plot in Gasport.
