From Buckboard to Airplane Is Tupper Guide's Transition

It's a far cry from the days when the old-time Adirondack guide used to meet his party at the station with the old buckboard or wagon to the present, in the opinion of Albert Hathaway, veteran Tupper Lake woodsman and guide for Col. S. P. Wetherill of Philadelphia.

Thursday Mr. Hathaway was detailed to meet a party of guests from the Quaker City, bound for Col. Wetherill's Pine Point Camp on Upper Saranac Lake.  His instructions were to meet the guests on the spacious field behind the U. S Veterans' Facility at Sunmount, and they arrived promptly on schedule in two airplanes, circled the field a few times, and when Mr. Hathaway waved his hat in greeting they set their planes down gracefully, and were in camp and ready for the day's fishing on Upper Saranac a few hours after leaving Philadelphia. The visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Hollister Judd and Mr. and Mrs. Sargent. The Judds remained in camp for a week.

The National Defense program will undoubtedly cut down to some extent on the number of sportsmen coming into the Adirondacks this fall. Albert Hathaway, caretaker of Pine Point Camp on Upper Saranac Lake, has received word that Lieutenant Giles Wetherill of Philadelphia, son of Col. S. P. Wetherill, owner, will have to forego his annual hunting trip here having been summoned to active duty with his outfit.

"Al's Radio Gang", headed by Albert Hathaway is booked to play a dance engagement at Grange Hall in Lewis. N. Y., on Nov. 8th. En route to Lewis they will put on a broadcast program over Station WNBZ at Saranac Lake.

Record-Post Hears from A. J. Hathaway, Former Band Leader in County

The Record-Post has received the following letter from Albert J. Hathaway of Tupper Lake, former Essex county resident well known to many people in Essex county where he and his band played at many dances for a number of years prior to his moving to Tupper Lake:

"After a terrible long delay I am enclosing $4 for The Record-Post for another year; am sorry I waited so long, but we have had a very busy summer. Our camp has had as many as 16 summer people at one time. We rented it to a school on Long Island; we had a teacher for awhile, also a professor, typists, stenographers, etc. All swell people. One of our tenants was a violin instructor and he surely could play. My son Carl has been promoted to the rank of first lieutenant in the National Guard Reserve; got his papers Monday, October 1. He is caretaker and guide at the John L. Loeb camp just across the bay from us."
