Barbara LaMay Howley

Saranac Lake--Barbara LaMay Howley, 79, of 4300 VanNess St., Washington, D.C., and Saranac Lake, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005 at her home at Camp Massapequa in Saranac Lake.

Born on July 1, 1926 in Montreal, Canada, she was the daughter of Venance and Rita (McMartin) LaMay. 

Mrs. Howley attended the Foxcroft School and graduated from Bryn Mawr College. She moved to Washington D.C. where she married J. Walter Howley, a professor at Georgetown University, in 1956.

Mrs. Howley was a member of the Catholic Daughters and an active volunteer in the Washington Home, a home for the elderly. She was also a communicant of St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake.

She is survived by a brother, V. Peter LaMay and his wife Rogene of Lake Clear; a niece, Barbara Darring of Saranac Lake; two great nephews; one great niece; and her best friend, Georgine Reed of Washington D.C.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1974 and her sister, Mary Elizabeth LaMay.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:15 am Wednesday, Oct. 12 at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake with the Rev. Jeffrey Hubbard officiating. Burial will be in Washington D. C.

The Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Barbara LeMay, daughter of Mrs. Roy A. Floyd-Jones, of Lower Saranac Lake, and Venance LeMay, of Leavenworth, Kansas, was married today in St. Bernard's Church to John Walter Howley, son of Mrs. John Walter Howley and the late Mr. Howley, of Weymouth, Mass.

The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Vernon L. Doe. The bride was given in marriage by her stepfather, Roy A. Floyd-Jones. A reception was held at the Floyd-Jones "Camp Massapequa."

The bride is an alumna of the Cours Fenelon, Paris, France, Foxcroft School and Bryn Mawr College. She is at present with the U.S. Information Agency in Washington, D.C. Mr. Howley, an alumnus of Norwich University and Boston University, received his doctorate from the University of Iowa. He is a professor of English at Georgetown University. During World War II he served in Europe with the Third Army.
