Camp DeBaun Sold To Wawbeek, Inc.

One of the well-known and long- established resort properties on Upper Saranac Lake changed hands this week with the sale of Camp DeBaun by Mr. and Mrs Howard B. Edwards of East Rockaway L. I., to Wawbeek, Inc., which operates Wawbeek Hotel on Upper Saranac.

The sale was closed Friday at the county clerk's office in Malone, with Eugene Van Voorhis. attorney, representing the Wawbeek interests and Adam R. Palmer, Tupper attorney, representing Mr. and Mrs. Edwards.

The Camp DeBaun property was originally the Walters camp, built in 1907. It was purchased in 1937 by Henry Gaisman of New York city, chairman of the board of Gillette Safety Razor Co., who invested heavily in rebuilding it as Sunny Cove Camp. About 1950 Mr. Gaisman gave the property and the Goldman property at Bull Point on Upper Saranac Lake to Mt. Sinai Hospital, and in 1956 Mr. and Mrs. Edwards bought Sunny Cove from the Mt. Sinai interests, formed the Ode Co.. Inc.. and have since operated it as Camp DeBaun. The property includes 70 acres, with about a half-mile of lake front, and some 27 buildings. It provided a varied summer camp recreation and athletic program for an average of 90 to 100 boys from throughout the northeast during the 8-weeks summer season, and had a staff of almost 50 people.

The Ode Co. will be dissolved and Mr. Edwards, who has had 20 years in Army service and holds the rank of lieutenant colonel, plans to return to active duty for the 22 months remaining until his full retirement.
