Christy Mathewson, Jr., son of famous New York Giant pitcher, Christy Mathewson, Sr., was seriously injured when his airplane crashed near Shanghai, China, on January 8, 1933. He had lived in Saranac Lake for three years with his mother. His plane nose-dived into a river bank, killing the former Margaret Phillips of Philadelphia, PA, his bride of two weeks. The couple were on their way to Hanchow where Mathewson was an instructor in a Chinese aviation school. Both of his arms and one leg were broken, and his leg was amputated. Nevertheless, he was commissioned as a Captain in the army and served as a flight instructor in World War II. He died at age 43 in an explosion at his home in San Antonio, TX.
