ROCHESTER - Dr. J. Craig Potter, 85, of Rochester and a long-time summer resident of Deer Island on Upper Saranac Lake, died Aug. 22; in Rochester.
Dr. Potter was born March 15, 1898, the son of Dr. Ezra Potter and Dr. Marion Craig Potter, both of Rochester.
He was educated at East High School, and after a year at the University of Rochester, transferred to Yale University, graduating in 1919. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1921, achieving his A.B. and his M.D. degrees in six years.
In 1923 he married Mary Greer of Johnstown, Pa., and returned to Rochester in 1924 to join his mother in the practice of general surgery and gynecology. Further training was later acquired at the Radiation Helmut in Stockholm.
Dr. Potter was a member of the American Medical Association, a charter member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, chief of the obstetrics and gynecological service at Rochester General Hospital, member of the teaching staff at Strong Memorial Hospital, and a past president of the Rochester Academy of Medicine.
He retired in 1972.
Survivors include two daughters, Marion Craig Potter, M.D., and Mrs. Thomas H. Gosnell; and four grandchildren, all of the Rochester area. The funeral service and burial were in Rochester.
