SARANAC LAKE .- Alice Eleanor Carter, 75, of 214 Lake St., Saranac Lake, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born on May 20, 1925, in Moira, she was the daughter of Clarence and Rachel (Sweet) Clopkey [sic: Clookey].

A long-time resident of Saranac Lake, Mrs. Carter owned and operated Alice's Restaurant for  many years, retiring in 1998. She was a member of the Women's Civic Chamber, the Women's Co Op Bowling League and enjoyed knitting, crochet and crafts. She was also a member of the Saranac Lake Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps.

Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Bowersock of Saranac Lake; two sisters: Barbara Burl of Saranac Lake, and Shirley Brier of Saranac Lake; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father, Clarence Clookey; two daughters, Beryle Laramee and Judith Woodruff; two granddaughters, Catherine Laramee and Kristine Alys Phelan; a brother; Edward Clookey and two sisters, June Gowett and Phyllis Clookey.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at.the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will be held at 16 a.m. [?] on Tuesday, March 27, at the funeral home with the Rev. ["William Neil"], pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Saranac Lake. Memorial contributions can be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad in care of the Funeral Home.
