Elizabeth "Bessie" McKillip Keegan Riley was working as a waitress at Stony Wold Sanatorium at age 18 in 1918. She especially loved the skating races on Pontiac Bay, Lake Flower. "She said Ed [Lamy] would skate in certain races, probably depending on the distance and the temperature, with a handkerchief stuffed in his mouth. As the race proceeded with Ed skating with the pack and with his own timing he would dramatically yank the handkerchief from his mouth, bringing the spectators to their feet cheering and yelling as Ed would leave the pack behind and go on in almost every event to win the race."

Mrs. Elizabeth Riley
SARANAC LAKE - Mrs. Elizabeth Riley, 86, of 6 Stevenson Lane, died early yesterday morning at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.
She was born Aug. 1, 1898, in Alder Brook, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (McKillip) Keegan.
She and Dennis Riley were married Sept. 16, 1923, at the Church of the Assumption in Gabriels by his cousin, Father Frank Cornish. They were the first couple married in the church.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Raymond and Charles, both of Saranac Lake, and Howard of Lake Placid; three daughters, Mrs. John (Rita) Littlefield of Tupper Lake, Mrs. Marguerite Ellithorpe of Saranac Lake and Mrs. Fred (Theresa) Gates of Clifton Park; 20 grandchildren; nine great grand-children; and a cousin, Margaret Buckley of Gabriels.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Keough and Son Funeral Home and include a Bible vigil at 7:30.
A mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church with Father John Yonkovig officiating at the service.
Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Carmelite Monastery in care of the funeral home.
