Ellen F. (Starr) Murphy, 88, formerly of 8 Church St., Saranac Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, surrounded by her loving family at the Eddy Ford Nursing Home in Cohoes after a brief illness.

Born in Port Edward on Nov. 8, 1914, she was the daughter of Joseph and Kathryn (O'Brien) Starr.

She resided most of her life in Saranac Lake. She was a first grade teacher at Saranac Lake Central School for 35 years and then taught at St. Bernard's School for four years before retiring in. 1975. Ellen was a daily communicant for many years at. St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Saranac Lake. She was a past lector at St. Bernard’s Church and member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Ellen, was also a long-time member of the Saranac Lake Golf Club. Her many hobbies included golf, cross-country skiing, knitting, crocheting and painting.

She is survived by two nephews, James S. Quinlivan and his wife Priscilla of Huntington W. Va., and Thomas K. Quinlivan and his wife Louise of Albany; three nieces, Kathleen M. Mady and her husband John of Clifton Park, Margaret M. Quinlivan of Albany and Mary Ellen Gibbons and her husband, Ed, of Chatham, N.J.; many great-nephews and great-niece; four great-great nephews; and one great-great-niece.

Ellen was predeceased by her parents; and her sister, Margaret J. Quinlivan of Albany, who died on July 22, 2003.

Calling hours will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.  A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow, at 11:15 a.m. at St Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church in Saranac Lake, Interment will be at St. Raphael's  Cemetery in Poultney, Vt.
