Francis "Frank" Ashton Ayer was the youngest son of George B. and Frances Ayer. He graduated Saranac Lake High School in 1905, and left for Stanford University in California. He later attended Columbia University and became a mining engineer. He went on to work around the world, including in Africa, and invented items related to the mining industry.

His family may have had a cabin in the Saranac Lake area in the 1930s.
