Fred Herbert was born in Germany, and moved to the United States in 1956 and to Saranac Lake in 1957.  He graduated from Paul Smith's College in 1962.  He and his wife operated the Lake Side Motel.

SARANAC LAKE — Fred H. Herbert. 55, of 27 Lake Flower Ave., Saranac Lake died Thursday morning. Dec. 5, 1985.

He was born June 12, 1930, in Gottingen, West Germany, the son of Hermann and Elly (Heuser) Herbert.

He moved to the U.S. in June of 1956. After spending a year in Rochester, he moved to Saranac Lake in 1957.

He was a 1962 graduate of Paul Smith's College. He and his wife owned and operated the Lake Side Motel in Saranac Lake since 1963. He was past president of the Saranac Lake Lions Club. He was a member and treasurer for the past six years of the Full Gospel Businessmen's International. He was a member of the 700 Club.

He is survived by his wife, the former Diana Wehs of Saranac Lake; two sons, Stephen of Diego-Garcia Naval Base in the Indian Ocean and Erik of Saranac Lake; a stepmother, Mrs. Lisa (Herbert) of Badorv, West Germany; a sister, Mrs. Brigitte Scheefer of Saranac Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Michael, died in December of 1984.

Calling hours were held at the Fortune Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

A Bible vigil was held Sunday at 8p.m.

A mass of Christian burial will be said today at 11:15 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake.

Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad.
