Frederick J. Charland was a World War II veteran.  He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Loris Charland.


Frederick Charland was a member of the World War II - SL Class of 1945, and a World War II veteran.  He worked as a printer with the Adirondack Daily Enterprise from 1963 until he retired in 1992.

SARANAC LAKE — Frederick J. Charland, 75. of 2 State St., Saranac Lake. died Wednesday, July 5, 2000 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born April 24, 1925 in Saranac Lake, he was a son of Loris "Nucky" and Pansy Mae (Brown) Charland.

Mr. Charland was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. Following the war, he was employed by Brownlite-Chapm Corp. and Carrier Corp. in Syracuse. Following that, he was employed by the Harold Journal as a printer from 1955 until 1963, when he moved to Saranac Lake. He [was] employed as a printer with the Adirondack Daily Enterprise from 1963 until he retired in 1992. He was a member of the Fish and Game Club, where he was the bookkeeper. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also a member of the Tuesday Night Men's Bowling League.

Survivors include his wife. Dorothy (Wojciak), whom he married on Oct. 5, 1946 in St. Bernard's Rectory; five daughters and son-in-laws, Bonnie and Peter Stockton of Ilion, Christine and Fred LaMere of Tupper Lake, Michele and Gerard Williams of Paul Smiths, Deirdre and Barry Badore of Saranac Lake and Heather and Alex Sinos of Patra, Greece; two sons and daughters-in-law: Michael and Diane Charland of Saranac Lake and Barton and Dianne Charland of Saranac; one sister, Mrs. Helen Soucia of Tully. two brothers: Charles Charland of Clay and Richard Charland of North Syracuse; 17 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Lyle Charland and Loris Charland Jr.. and a granddaughter, Brittany Charland.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Bible Vigil will be held at 8 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:15 a:m. on Friday at St. Bernard's Church with Rev. Joseph Wheelock officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Tupper Lake.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department or High Peaks hospice in care of the funeral home.

"Frederick J. Charland, seaman first class in the Navy, who recently returned to the United States after eight overseas trips to Scotland, Russia and England. He has been in service since March 10, 1943 and after training at Sampson and Little Creek, Va., was ordered to duty in the Atlantic theater. He visited in Saranac Lake during the past weekend and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loris Charland of Massena, formerly of this village."
