Hubert A. St. John was a World War II veteran.   He was a son of Adlard and May (Colby) St. John.

SARANAC LAKE — Hubert A. St. John, 74, of 226 Broadway, died Tuesday, May 30, at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

He was born in Lake Placid Nov. 11, 1914, the son of Adlard and May (Colby) St. John. He was married June 8, 1942, in Lake Placid, to Grace Ratelle who survives.

He had been a resident, of Saranac Lake since 1943, when he moved from Lake Placid. He worked as a painter for Theodore Stay and Sons of Plattsburgh until his retirement in 1972. He was a veteran of World War II and was a Golden Gloves boxer while serving in the army. He was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In the 40s, Mr. St. John owned a 23-dog sled team, which he used to take passengers from the Marcy Hotel in Lake Placid on rides around Mirror Lake. He drove MGM studio cameramen around on his sled-dog team so they could film the Adirondacks. Mr. St. John was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Arthur and Raymond, both of Saranac Lake; five daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Margaret) Kilburn of Keeseville and Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Ecret, Mrs. Robert (Violet) Dora, Mrs. Rod (Terry) Reynolds and Mrs. Tim (Heidi) Coventry, all of Saranac Lake.

He was predeceased by a son, Hubert, in 1972.

Additional survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Leda White of Saranac Lake, Mrs. Harvey (Phyllis) Lamere of Keeseville and Mrs; John (Helen) Vasser of Peru;. one brother, Raymond St. John of Saranac Lake, 17 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 tonight and 2-4 arid 7-9 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at the Keough and Son Funeral Home here.

Funeral Services will be said at 11 a.m. Friday, June 2, at the First United Methodist Church here, with the Rev. Robert Lowenthal officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Friends wishing to remember Mr. St. John may make contributions to the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad in care of Keough and Son Funeral Home.
