James F. Stover, M.D., practiced for a time in Saranac Lake. He and his wife Nancy lived at 84 Glenwood Drive. A U.S. Navy Veteran, Capt. Stover is buried in Harrietstown Cemetery.

SARANAC LAKE — Dr. James F. Stover, 57, of Saranac Lake, died Aug. 7, 1994 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born March 9, 1937 in Jamaica N.Y., he was the son of Lucien and Dorothy (Keele) Stover. A 1955 graduate of Central High School in Valley Stream, he received his bachelor of arts degree from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. in 1959. He then attended New York Medical College and was awarded his medical degree in 1963.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1963 and completed his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans in 1964.

During 1964-65 he was a student flight surgeon at the U.S. Naval Hospital of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, Fla. From 1965-67 he held the position of flight surgeon, 2nd Marine Air Group, at the Marine Air Station in Beaufort; S.C. (dispensary medicine). In 1967 he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. where he completed his residency in general internal medicine in June 1970. He served as an internist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Camp LeJeune, N.C., and as the assistant chief of medicine-head of dependent medicine from 1970-73, achieving the rank of commander.

In 1973, he and his family moved to Saranac Lake, where he joined the staff of Medical Associates. He entered the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1988 and held the rank of captain until illness forced his retirement

Dr. Stover received his certification from the National Board of Medical Examiners in July 1964, his New York State License in October 1964, and his American Board of Internal Medicine certification in December 1972. He authored several articles published in medical journals.

He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Physicians. Between 1970 and 1973 he was a contributing participant at the 2nd Annual Current Concepts in Medicine at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.; the American College of Physicians Annual Sessions in Denver, Colo., Atlantic City, N.J., Charlotte, N.C., and Chicago, Ill. He also participated in the Naval Renal Transplantation Conference at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. and the American College of Physicians Post Graduate Course in Philadelphia, Pa.

As a partner in Medical Associates, he held the position of secretary-treasurer from 1975 to 1977; treasurer from 1977-78; vice president in 1978; president from 1979 to 1988; and treasurer from 1988 until his death.

As a member of the Adirondack Medical Center staff, he served on a number of committees, including by-laws, medical equipment, credentials, quality assurance, and blood utilization review. He was chairman of the critical care unit from 1975 until 1994. While a member of the hospital executive committee (1978 to 1982), he served as secretary from 1978-79. He held the post of vice president of the hospital medical staff from January 1980-82. Dr. Stover also served as a member of the courtesy staff at Placid Memorial Hospital during its merger with the General Hospital of Saranac Lake to form the Adirondack Medical Center between 1987 and 1991. His area medical practice also included the positions of supervisory physician from 1974-1982 and medical supervisor from 1982-1994 at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center, and Paul Smith's College physician from 1986 until his illness. He was also a physician for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid. He was a member of the Franklin County Medical Society and of the New York State Medical Society.

He also was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Hall Stiles Stover of Saranac Lake; three sons, Timothy J. of Glens Falls, Matthew S. of Reading, Pa., and Gabriel Michael of Annandale, N.J.; two step-daughters, Erin A. Stiles and Kathryn E. Stiles, both of Saranac Lake; his mother, Mrs. Lucien  (Dorothy) Stover , and a sister, Mrs. Joanne Milstein, both of Amityville; his former wife, Mrs. Gabrielle E. (Helmus) Stover of Newtown Square, Pa.; a granddaughter and a nephew.

Calling hours will be held at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake, with the Rev. James Mechem and the Rev. Charles Monts officiating. Following cremation, interment will be in Harrietstown Cemetery.

After the Wednesday service, the family will receive friends at the Hotel Saranac.
