John E. Morgan was a bobsledder and a World War II veteran. He served as Saranac Lake Village Clerk for about ten years, and later as Harrietstown Town Clerk. He lived at 104 Main Street. His parents lived at 21 Cedar Street.

SARANAC LAKE - John E. Morgan, 91, of 104 Main Street here, died Saturday, April 12, 1997 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where he had been a resident since 1995.
Born March 13, 1906 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Edward and Julia (Buckley) Morgan. He was a graduate of Saranac Lake High School where he excelled in baseball and basketball. He was a graduate of Fordham University and worked on Wall Street for 10 years.
In 1941 he enlisted in the Navy but was discharged because of a knee injury. Inducted into the Army in 1942, he attended Officers Candidate School and became a second lieutenant in 1943. At the time of his discharge in 1946 he had attained the rank of captain.
In 1944 he married the former Evelyn Taylor Scott at Little Church Around the Corner in New York City.
Upon returning to Saranac Lake, he was appointed Saranac Lake Village Clerk, a position he held for about 10 years. He then was elected Harrietstown Town Clerk, a position he held until his retirement in 1973.
Mr. Morgan was active as an official in bobsledding for more than 25 years. He was appointed U.S. Olympic Bobsled chairman in 1960 and was manager of the 1964 United States Olympic Bobsled Team in Innsbruck. Austria. He was also an avid golfer and was secretary and treasurer of the Saranac Lake Golf Club for 12 years where for many years he was the Class B Club Champion.
Mr Morgan was a past commander of the American Legion Post 447 and past member of the Board of Governors of Veterans Memorial Association. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge 1508 and also of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; a nephew, Richard Sennett of Pinehurst. N.C.; his niece, Elizabeth T. Vivieros of Exeter, R.I.; and a cousin, Irene Bassett of Morrisonville.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake There will be no calling hours. Following cremation, interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.
