SARANAC LAKE - John H. Bombard, 66, of 1 Fawn St. here, died Thursday, March 6, 1997 at the Adirondack Medical Center.

Born Nov. 28, 1930, he was the son of Howard and Mattie (Taylor) Bombard.

On Dec. 6, 1952 he married the former Janice Aubin at St. Bernard's Church.

Mr. Bombard was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake. He was employed at the Ray Brook Tuberculosis Hospital, and continued to work there when it became the Ray Brook Rehabilitation Center, and later the Adirondack Correctional Facility, retiring in 1986.

He served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1952 in Japan and in Korea. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korea Service Medal with two bronze service stars, U.N. Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Following his release from active duty Mr. Bombard was a member of the National Guard Unit in Saranac Lake for 21 years.

Mr. Bombard was a member of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years, and served as the fire chief from 1978 to 1980.

He was a member of the Franklin County Advisory Board, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Wednesday night Men's Bowling League. Mr. Bombard was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Beth Ann Martell of Bozeman, Mont., Brenda McNamara of Tupper Lake, and Lisa Bombard of Sand Point, Idaho; a son, Marc Bombard of Saranac Lake; a brother, Gerard Bombard of Saranac Lake; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, James Bombard.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A veteran's service will take place at 8 p.m. Sunday, followed by a Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department prayer service. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Frederick Dennis officiating. Cremation will take place with interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery in May.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
