Joseph M. Catalano was a World War II veteran.  He was a son of Anthony and Anna (Mimnaugh) Catalano.

SARANAC LAKE - Joseph M. Catalano, 67, 14 East Pine Street, died Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Mercy Healthcare Center in Tupper Lake.

He was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Manhattan, the son of Anthony and Anna (Mimnaugh) Catalano.

Mr. Catalano was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. Upon his discharge in 1946 it was discovered that he had tuberculosis and he was sent to Gabriels Sanatorium.

There he met Audrey Bryant, whom he married on April 23,1950.

Mr. Catalano had been employed as a senior account clerk at Sunmount Veterans Hospital, which later became the Sunmount Developmental Center, for 35 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and was well known in the area for his interest in youth sporting events.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jay M. Catalano of Colchester, Vt., and Craig A. Catalano of Saranac Lake; two brothers, Thomas Catalano of Woodside, Long Island, and Nicholas Catalano of Lexington, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Fortune Funeral Home. A Bible vigil will be said Friday evening and the Knights of Columbus will stand guard during the evening calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. with a fourth degree honor guard at St. Bernard's Church. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.
