Knute Grytebust was a Norwegian sailor during World War II who was treated for tuberculosis after the war in Saranac Lake. Apparently his treatment included a phrenic nerve crush in order to permanently paralyse the diaphragm on one side. This would cause paralysed diaphragm to rise up and the lung on that side to collapse, thus closing the cavity and relieving the patient of the coughing associated with tb infection.
