SERVICES HELD FOR MISS MAMIE EVANS
Funeral services for Miss Mamie Vosburgh Evans, one of the best known and loved of Saranac Lake's early residents were held last week from the Church of St. Luke the Beloved Physician, The Rev. George Boys, rector of the church celebrated the last rites.
Death occurred in Plattsburg where Miss Evans had been living for some time with Mr. and Mrs. John Walton, former residents there Mrs. Walton was her cousin, and also her foster sister. Miss Evans had been an invalid for-eight years.
Born in Clintonville, N. Y., on May 28th, 1860, the daughter, of Albert Vosburgh, she passed the first six years of her life in that community. Upon the death of her mother she went to Saranac Lake to live with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Evans, by whom she was adopted and whose name she took.
Active in community life, Miss Evans will be remembered by many as the volunteer librarian of the Franklin County library the institution which preceeded the Saranac Lake Free library. Prominent in affairs of the Church of St. Luke the Beloved Physician, she was a charter member of the Altar Guild, and treasurer of St. Margaret's Guild, as well as teacher in the Sunday school.
Miss Evans left Saranac Lake three years ago with Mr. and Mrs. John Walton, their son Philip and daughter Marion, at the time of the disposal of their property there. They lived for a short time in Quincy, Mass., and later in Plattsburgh.
Beside the Waltons, she is survived by a brother Charles Vosburgh of Willsborough; two half-brothers, William and Edward Vosburgh of Saranac Lake; a half-sister, Mrs. Andrew Hill of Calgary, Alberta; and several cousins.
Pall bearers at the funeral were: A. D. Manning, Seaver A. Miller, Dr. W. A. Wardner, Leon Liscomb, Philip Walton and Frank Vosburgh.
Interment will take place in Pine Ridge Cemetery
