Martha Tyler John was a Fulbright professor in Botswana and dean of the School of Education and Human Services at Marymount University, where she was awarded an endowed chair. She remained there until being appointed vice chancellor of Africa Nazarene University in Nairobi, Kenya.

She graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1947. She received a B.S. in education in 1951 and taught grade school in Kansas City, Missouri for a year before returning to Vermontville, where she married Floyd I. John in August 1952.

Martha and Floyd attended graduate schools together and raised a family. Martha worked while Floyd received a master’s degree in 1953. Their first son, Floyd, was born in November 1953, in Gary, Indiana. Floyd was drafted in the Army in 1954, and a second son, Bruce, was born in 1955. In 1956 they went to Purdue University, where Martha received a master’s degree and Floyd completed a doctorate and taught at Purdue. A third son, David, was born there in 1961.

Her professional career involved visits to over fifty countries. She lived in Europe for a year and traveled extensively, seeing the Berlin Wall and the Passion Play at Oberamagau, and visiting a dozen countries, including the Holy Land, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Greece.
