The Reverend Martin Carter joined the Friars of Atonement as it was the only one that allowed African American parishioners in his community.
He entered the order of Franciscans in 1948 at the St. Joseph Friary in Saranac Lake, and then served in Ohio, Jamaica, and Raleigh, North Carolina.
In 1950, he made his first profession with the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in Saranac Lake.
