Martin Koop dies

SARANAC LAKE - Martin Koop, 79, a well known area merchant and Santa Claus to many area children, died early Friday morning. He had been a resident of Saranac Lake since 1937.

Mr. Koop was born April 23, 1900, in Hamburg, Germany, the son of Julius and Wilhelmina Koop.

He had been a silversmith, and had owned and operated the Temming Art Studio in Saranac Lake from 1944 to 1973. For many years, he had portrayed Santa Claus at churches, schools, and private homes.

He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Lions.

He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Temming; a daughter, Mrs, Theresa Kunath of Saranac Lake; a son, Joseph, of Georgetown, Cal.; a brother, John, of Saranac Lake; three grandchildren, Heidi, Kristine, and Elizabeth Temming; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held Monday, at 2 p.m. at the Fortune Funeral Home, with Msgr. Noel Zimmerman officiating.

Cremation will be in Troy.
