Miss Mary Emogene Utting died Friday, July 15, 2022 at Sharon Towers.

 

She was born April 10, 1927, in Saranac Lake, the only child of George Arthur and Agnes Annie Utting. Her parents and her stepfather, Herbert E. Watson, all predeceased her.

After graduation from Saranac Lake High School and Cornell University, she worked for the Miami Daily News in Florida, 1948-1955. In 1955, she joined The Charlotte Observer in North Carolina, where she spent more than 18 years, serving as women’s editor for 13 years.

She then became the National Director of Women in Communications, Inc. in Austin, Texas, 1974-1983, and finally worked as an editor at Texas A&M University, College Station, until her 1997 retirement.

In 1998, she returned to Charlotte, where she was an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church, a member of the Charlotte Writer’s Club, the Mint Museum, Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society, and the Cornell Alumni Association of Charlotte. In 2015, she sold her condominium and moved to Sharon Towers.

A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 30 at 2:30 p.m.
