Mrs. Mary E. Ingersoll, 59, who was a patient here for many years died Christmas Day at Cockeysville, near Baltimore Md., where she had been making her home for the past few years with her sister, Mrs. Garnet Hulings.
She was a literary agent and in partnership with Madeline Brennan, operated an agency in New York City from 1939 to 1961 when they moved to Baltimore. For many years she conducted her business from her bed here. The agency represented many prominent writers including Walter Farley, author of the Black Stallion series for children, Christopher Rand, author of Cambridge, U. S. A, and of the late Martha Reben of Saranac Lake.
Mrs. Ingersoll was born in Dallas, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Alexander Carden of New York City and Bayshore. She attended schools in Farmington, Conn, and Paris and in 1926 was married to Ralph M. Ingersoll, then managing editor of the New Yorker. He later became managing editor of Fortune; launched a new tabloid newspaper, PM, which failed, and became general manager of Time and life publications. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1938.
Survivors are her sisters, Mrs. Hulings and Mrs. Gerald Constable Maxwell of Arlesford England, and a brother, Dr. George A. Carden, Jr. of New York City.
A funeral service was held this morning in the chapel of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York and burial will be in Hartsdale, N. Y.
