Mike Peer worked at the New York State Hospital at Ray Brook. He was also a bobsledder, a boxer and a hockey coach for the Saranac Lake Pee Wee Hockey Association.

SARANAC LAKE — Mike Peer, 58, of 6 Elm Street, died suddenly after being stricken while working in Lake Placid Thursday, October l.
He was born Dec. 25, 1928, in Tupper Lake, the son of John and Dorothy (Walsh) Peer.
He was married on August 26, 1951, to the former Mary Box of Saranac Lake.
Mr. Peer was employed at the Ray Brook Sanitarium until 1965, and later worked for the state correctional system at prisons in Auburn, Clinton and Ray Brook. He retired as a vocational instructor in 1984.
Mr. Peer was a member and former team coach in the Saranac Lake Pee Wee Hockey Association. He was a member of the VFW and a former member of St. Bernard's Parish Council and the Professional Employees Association.
In addition, he was a former bobsledder and a boxer who once competed in the Vermont Golden Gloves tournament.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Michael of Rutland, Vt., and Daniel and William of Saranac Lake; six daughters, Miss Kathleen Peer, Mrs. Ellen Yousey and Miss Annemarie Peer, all of Saranac Lake, Mrs. Margaret Fletcher of Canton, Mrs. Patti Martin of Paul Smiths and Mrs. Elizabeth Lennon of Saranac, and 10 grandchildren.
Also surviving is his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Peer of Saranac Lake; a brother, Walter of Burlington, Mass.; two sisters, Mrs. Winifred Spadola of Hicksville and Mrs. Evelyn Camelo of Saranac Lake, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fortune Funeral Home. A Bible vigil service will take place at 7:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard's Church.
Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
Donations in Mr. Peer's memory may be made in care of the funeral home to the Pee Wee Hockey Association or the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad.
