Muriel Stevenson Whittum was the daughter of Adrian D. Stevenson, who in 1900 purchased the Hiawatha Lodge at Coreys.

Muriel Stevenson Whittum, 95, of Coreys, Tupper Lake, died Saturday, May 9, 1998 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Born March 29, 1903 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of Adrian and Anna (Sanford) Stevenson, owners and operators of the Hiawatha Lodge in Coreys.
Ms. Whittum was a graduate of Smith College and was married briefly to Walter W. Whittum in 1928. She later received a masters degree in social work from the New York School of Social Work. She worked for many years as a social worker in the New York Metropolitan area and in 1957, relocated to Ballston Lake, NY where she continued her career until retiring in 1978.
Throughout her life, Ms. Whittum spent time every year at the family home, Hiawatha Lodge at Coreys. She enjoyed spending time with family.
Survivors include one son, Sanford Whittum and his wife, Anne (Disotell) of Tupper Lake; three grandchildren, Mrs. David (Stephanie) O'Sullivan of Eagleville, PA, Muriel Hesler of Silver Spring, MD, and Kinsley Whittum and his wife, Mary Sue of Webster, NY; two nieces, Nancy Stevenson Clark of Arlington, MA, and Constance Leftwich of Lincolndale, NY; and nine greatgrandchildren.
The family met friends at the Richer Funeral Home from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, at which time a prayer service was held. A memorial Mass, to be announced, will be held at St. Alphonsusi Cemetery later this summer. Burial will be held in Cypress Hill Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
