Bloomingdale Teacher Honored For Service

More than 100 adults, many of whom were former pupils, as well as practically every student of the Bloomingdale Union School, came to the Town Hail yesterday evening to pay tribute to Miss Nellie Fletcher, teacher of grades one and two (with many youngsters of kindergarten age, too) who will retire this June after teaching for more than 30 years…

…Born Sept. 4, 1889, Miss Fletcher is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bethuel Fletcher and still resides in the homestead built by her grandfather, Wilson Fletcher. She received her education in Bloomingdale, Saranac Lake and Mooers Training School.

Her first school was in Forestdale where she had 12 students in all grades, most of whom were of French Canadian extraction and talked French mostly in school.

After teaching in Merrillsville, Harrietstown and St. Armand she went to Plattsburgh Normal where she finished in 1923; taught in Patchogue, L.I. for one year and could have returned but preferred the mountains.

She also taught in Ellenburg, Lake Colby and Bloomingdale; took a leave of absence for 8 years because of her mother's ill health.

After this she spent some time teaching in Gabriels, but returned to Bloomingdale where she has taught for the past 13 years, making 19 years in all. Miss Fletcher made a short speech of thanks to all and states she is already lonesome and probably will be anxious to get a chance to substitute when occasion rises.
