Newton S. Fink served as director of the Land's End Center of the New York Synod of the Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake.

Son of Newton W. Fink and Mary Dake.
He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, a graduate of Greenville College, Greenville, IL. and Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, and did extensive graduate work at Syracuse University.
Newton followed a career in religious music and education in Clarksburg, WV, and Binghamton and Syracuse, became Director of the Lands End Center of NY Synod of the Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake.
From 1965 until his retirement in 1983, he developed and led programs in personal growth, leadership training and other areas. He remained active in leadership training circles in retirement.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Virginia, who passed away in 1999.
Survived by 2 daughters, 2 sons, 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 sister.

Oratorio Society Concert Displays Training, Control

Hooray for the Finks! Saranac Lake is indeed lucky that they have moved to town and the Oratorio Society is again a part of life here. The concert by the members of the Society took place last evening in the Town Hall and for those attending it was indeed a perfect closing to a beautiful Sunday. For those who missed the event, promise yourselves to go to the next concert which will be next season.
Newton Fink has done a marvelous job of training a very fine group of singers. The program was, arranged with taste and variety and was presented with quiet assurance and ability. Several of the songs were familiar but not overly so and those that were new to the audience were well chosen. The program mainly consisted of religious songs which was most fitting on Sunday evening. They went from the exquisite little Silesian folk song, "Beautiful Savior," with Gloria Ayvazian as soloist to the large and operatically treated "Hear My Prayer" by Mendelssohn with Donna Allen as soloist. Both soloists sang beautifully.
Gloria Ayvazian and Joan Utterback, who are fast becoming one of the most sought after "combos" in the North County, gave variety to the program in a group of songs with guitar accompaniment, The final group of songs by the Oratorio Society illustrated the training and control that they have developed in a relatively short time. Songs such as the "Echo Song." by Orlando di Lasso and heard here last summer by the Swedish Choir, "Hospodi Pomilui," "Soon All Will Be Done", and "Alleluia" all had problems in technique or dynamics as well as being excellent pieces of music. Mr. Fink should also be commended for choosing as his last work a composition by one of America's leading composers... Randal Thompson. Mr. Thompson is known to most students of piano and this “Alleluia" was worth hearing.
A great share in the success of last night's program should go to Joyce Kains who was the solid support of the group by providing sure and able accompaniments. We look forward to the next concert and hope the Oratorio is now back for good. Again, congratulations to everyone but a special accolade to Mr. Fink.
