Oscar Morehouse was a fifth-generation descendent of John Thomas, a slave in Maryland who came to the Adirondacks to settle on land granted by Gerritt Smith.  He was a son of Marshall and Elizabeth Gorrow Morehouse.

Oscar Morehouse was a long-term employee of  J. J. O'Connell & Sons, for whom he put in 30 years as a glazier, beginning in the 1920s. He lived in Vermontville.

Oscar Morehouse

Oscar Louis Morehouse, age 87, of Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid and formerly of Vermontville, died on Sunday, April 30, 2023.

Oscar was born on Nov. 28, 1935 in Saranac Lake, the son of Elizabeth (Garrow) and William Marshall Morehouse. Oscar was a fifth generation descendant of John Thomas, a slave from Maryland who came to the Adirondacks to seek his American citizenship.

Oscar attended the Saranac Lake school district. After graduation, Oscar started working for local farms in the area. When Oscar was tired from farming, he went to work as a painter for Vito Pallotta. Painting was his passion. Oscar was a Yankee fan and loved to fish with his brother Vic. He also enjoyed many a card game with his friends.

Oscar is survived by two step-daughters: Tina Meddaugh of Lake Placid and Tasey Premo of Paul Smith, and a step-son Michael Canty of Vermontville. Oscar is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Oscar was predeceased by his parents and his wife Donna Morehouse. He was also predeceased by his brother Victor Morehouse, Marshall (Sonny) Morehouse and three sisters: Mary Elizabeth, Joan and Margaret.

The family would like to thank the many staff members of Elderwood for always taking good care of our Oscar. Especially the many phone calls to inform us of any issues that arose. They are grateful for the care he was given in his time being on Unit 4.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake. As per Oscar’s request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of Oscar’s niece Donna Wilcox and husband Craig. In lieu of flowers, donations in Oscar’s memory may be made to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
