SARANAC LAKE — Richard W. Williams, 77, of Old Lake Colby Corners on the Bloomingdale-Gabriels Road, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1991.
Born in Mt. Vernon on June 22, 1914, he was the son of John H. and Harriet L. (Wakelee) Williams.
He married Abbie M. Mclntyre on Jan. 15, 1946 at the United Methodist Church in Lakeville, Conn., with the Rev. Edward Edmunds officiating.
As a youth he was active in Boy Scouts, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a military veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1934 to 1938. He then served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and later served during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a machinist first mate first class, from 1943 to 1945.
He was a master craftsman, and worked for many years for J.P. Hyde of Saranac Lake. He founded, was a 45-year member of, and served as commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9856 of Cornwall, Conn. He had also served as commander of the VFW Fifth District for the state of Connecticut. He was also a past master of the Masonic Lodge 74 in Cornwall. In Saranac Lake he had been an active member of the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club, and was a charter member of the Fifth Quarter Club.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Grace) Kipping of Paul Smiths,; four grandchildren, Jennifer L, Charland of Saranac Lake, Richard Charland serving in the U.S. Navy, Allison Charland of Saranac. Lake,and Jacob Kipping of Paul Smiths.
He was predeceased by two sons, Richard W. Wlliams; Jr. and John Irving Williams. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A Masonic service will, be held Thursday at 7:30, also at the funeral home. Area Masons are asked to meet for the service. A VFW service will follow the Masonic Service, at 8 Thursday.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Lowenthal, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Saranac Lake, officiating. Burial will be, in Brookside Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorial donations may be made to the Richard Williams Memorial for the purchase of special medical equipment for diagnosing and treating laryngeal cancer, in care of the funeral home.
