WHITMAN — In Harrietstown, July 7th. Mrs. Zoa Whitman, widow of the late George Whitman, aged eighty-three years.
Mrs. Whitman was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alexander LaBounty, pioneer resident of Harrietstown, and she has been a resident there for upwards of half a century, where she was universally loved and respected for her warm-hearted, loving disposition and generous and sympathtic heart. She was the third of a family of fourteen children, all of whom but two have passed away. These are Mrs. Joseph Otis of Lake Clear, and George Labounty, of Saranac Lake. Mrs. Whitman was a contemporary of the late Paul Smith and Harriet Duane, after whom the town of Harrietstown was named. Mr. Whitman followed farming for years in Harrietstown and lumbering in the vicinity, and the couple, by hard work and saving accumulated several hundred acres of land. Nine of their children grew to maturity, five of whom are now living. They are Alvin Whitman, of Harrietstown; Mrs. Charles Martin, Gilbert Whitman and Mrs. Emily Morrow of Saranac Lake; and Mrs. Edward Otis, of Lake Clear. The first wife of Tuffield Latour, of Saranac Lake, was a daughter of deceased, and Supervisor Latour is a grandson, who after the death of his mother resided for some years with the grandmother on the farm and was brought up by her until he went away to complete his education. The funeral was held from St. Bernard's church. Saranac Lake, on Thursday.
