Esteban L. Bovo, Jr. was elected to serve on the Miami-Dade County Commission to represent District 13 on May 24, 2011. Commissioner Bovo's district includes the areas of Hialeah, Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North, Country Club and other areas of unincorporated Miami-Dade.
Previously, Commissioner Bovo was first appointed to fill a vacancy on the Hialeah City Council in 1998, and was elected in both 1999 and 2005. In 2006, Commissioner Bovo was selected to serve as President of Hialeah City Council and remained in that capacity during his tenure. In November 2008, Commissioner Bovo was elected as State Representative in District 110, which is also inclusive of the Hialeah, Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North. In 2010, he was re-elected without opposition.
As City Councilman, Commissioner Bovo sponsored the anti-predator law of the City of Hialeah and concentrated on quality of life issues. As state legislator, Commissioner Bovo was an outspoken advocate of the historic Hialeah Race Track Park and worked diligently towards its 2009 re-opening. Throughout the 2009 legislative session, he also sponsored a resolution naming the month of May as "A Safe Haven for Newborns Day," recognizing the Gloria M. Silveiro Foundation. In addition, through sponsored resolution, April 17, 2009 was designated "Bay of Pigs Memorial Day" in commendation of the Bay of Pigs Museum and Library of the 2506 Assault Brigade, where historic memorabilia is preserved. His father, Esteban Bovo-Caras is a member of the 2506 Brigade.
Representative Bovo sponsored the Ashley Nicole Valdes Act. This law requires defendants who have been arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident to be held in custody until judge ruling.
In 2010, Bovo was honored by his colleagues in the Legislature and was named Chairman of the Hispanic Legislative Caucus. In 2011, Bovo Chaired the Committee of Business Regulation in Tallahassee.
Commissioner Bovo was born on June 12, 1962 in Queens, New York. He has lived in Miami-Dade County since 1968. He holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Florida International University. He is married to Viviana Bovo and has five children, Oscar (18), Bianca (17), Esteban (16), Sofia (10) and Alessandro (11 months old).
